Interceptive Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment is most commonly seen in the form of braces or aligners. Inceptive orthodontics proactively addresses orthodontic problems (often skeletal discrepancies) early, ideally before they become more challenging to correct. By taking advantage of growing jaws, we can address issues like anterior crossbites, posterior crossbites, or severe crowding. In most cases, your child will still need a second phase of orthodontic treatment once all the permanent teeth are erupted to more precisely align all the teeth. However, interceptive treatment reduces the time needed for phase II orthodontic correction, reduces chances of tooth impaction, and corrects skeletal discrepancies through growth modifications.

Interceptive orthodontic treatment begins as early as age seven and may include:

  • Maintaining space for permanent teeth
  • Expanding the upper jaw to correct crossbites
  • Expanding the jaw to create more space for permanent tooth eruption
  • Eliminating thumb sucking and pacifier habits.
  • Removing over-retained baby teeth that may be in the way of permanent teeth
  • Reducing protrusions to correct overbites and reduce the risk of dental trauma

From a patient’s young age, our team of dentists will evaluate jaw shape and structure, family history, bite alignment, and tooth spacing. We have strong relationships with orthodontists across southern Maine, and we will help ensure your child’s orthodontic needs are met.
